Contributed by Dixfield Historical Society

Description

The Dixfield Band was very important to community and cultural life in Dixfield. The seeds of the band were planted as early as the 1860's by George Holt, father of the three Holt brothers.

The band was founded in 1890 by Thomas Holt, on the far right. His brother, G. Dana Holt, is sixth from the left and was a charter member and leader for over forty years. Thomas played trombone and horn, and G. Dana was an acclaimed cornetist. Their brother George also played alto saxophone and other wind instruments.

The band played many concerts and public events well into the 1950's. In addition to being accomplished musicians, the Holt Brothers also owned and operated Holt's Print Shop and Dixfield Marble and Granite Works on Weld Street.
