Description

James Cunningham, a prominent Maine architect, built the Lafayette building in 1903. The hotel became famous for its Mayfair Ballroom and mosaic tile floors.

The former Lafayette Hotel is located on 638 Congress Street in downtown Portland. Though once a luxury hotel, since the 1960s the building has been redesigned as one, two and three bedroom apartments and renamed Lafayette Square Apartments.

With its proximity to downtown Portland, residents are in walking distance from the major shopping district of Portland.
