Description

This photograph is of the lower quarry owned by the Portland-Monson Company, ca. 1890. Once the company reached a certain depth in the quarry they then opened up tunnels as seen in this photo. Standing at the entrance of this tunnel are five quarry workers, information provided with this photograph states the tunnel was 30 feet deep.

On the floor of the pit is the "box" which was used to lower and raise the men and slate in and out of the quarry. Rubbish slate was taken to the surface and left in great heaps beside the pit, while the good slate was loaded onto small rail-cars and moved into the mill for processing.
