Description
This black and white postcard depicts Bear Island near Northeast Harbor.
Mariners approaching Mount Desert Island from the east via the Eastern Way, and from the west, along the Western Way, have a clear view of Bear Island and its light house standing at the entrance to Northeast Harbor.
First established as a lighthouse in 1839, the present structure was built in 1889 and discontinued by the Coast Guard by 1989. With its light flashing every five seconds, it continues (in 2012) to operate as a private aid to navigation.
The inscription on the front of the postcard reads, "How is Harvey today? Isn't it dreadful about him. Marjory"
This postcard was mailed from Dark Harbor, Maine to Mr. H. T. Sawyer, in Millbridge, Maine.
