Description

This photograph clearly shows "the box" which was used by the hoister operator to lower men into the slate quarry to work. During the work day the operator was also responsible for bringing up slate, lowering supplies, and bringing the men back to the surface which was all done by a series of bells. The base of the hoist is located in the upper right hand corner.
