Description
George F. Shepley of Portland, judge of the First Circuit U.S. Court, was accepted for membership into the American Metric Bureau of Boston. The group was organized by the Advocates of the Metric System and sought to have the metric system "taught in schools, introduced into factories, shops, and homes, used in markets and stores..." They wanted the U.S. to "join the rest of the civilized world" in the use of the International Decimal System.
