Description

This photograph shows the outbuildings and hoister house beside the Portland-Monson Slate Quarry mine, near the turn of the twentieth century.

The "box" with men standing in it located next to the hoister house. This piece of equipment was used to transported into and out of the quarry. The same piece of equipment could also be used to lift slate out of the mines where it would then be deposited into carts. The carts ran on the tracks located in the background, which were used to then transport the slate from the quarry to the mills.
