John Coleman, owner of the Portland-Monson Slate Company, was visiting Monson when this photo was taken in 1912. Coleman lived in Portland but made frequent business trips to Monson to oversee the operations. The car is a 1912 Buick Model 43 Touring car, it was the largest car offered by Buick in 1912 and the most expensive at about $1700 according to information provided by the Owls Head Tansportation Museum.
The Portland-Monson Slate Company was one of the largest employers in Monson during the early part of the 20th century.
