Description

The Woman's Literary Union of Portland put on a fundraiser entitle "Groote Winkel," or Dutch Village Fair, from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3, 1915 to raise money for its club house fund.

The WLU, made up of members of women's literary or study groups, had about 800 members and was raising money to build an auditorium and clubhouse on Spring Street in Portland, on two lots it had been given by George C. Frye, husband of WLU founder Eunice Nichols Frye.

The fair consisted of various booths including fortune telling, one selling preserves, jams and pickles; a cake booth, a handkerchief booth, a Dutch grill, a needlework booth, a children's booth, and a books and music booth, among many others.

Pauline Winslow, described as a student in the design class at the Art School, designed the cover of the souvenir book.
