Veterans, Oxford, ca. 1943

Description

Veterans from four wars pose next to the Honor Roll of Oxford veterans. In the chair at center is George H. Jones, a Civil War veteran. In 1943, when this photo probably was taken, Jones was commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a Civil War veterans organization. He was the only Maine veteran to serve in that position.

Behind him are, from left, Kelsey Young, World War II; Otis Howe, World War II; Tim Coolidge, World War I; James Kave, World War II; and Wilfred K. Perkins; Spanish-American War.

Jones, who was born on Feb. 1, 1849, spent five weeks -- at the end of the war -- as a musician in an unassigned group of recruits, all of it served as Camp Keyes in Augusta. He was 16 when he enlisted, but gave his age as 18. He died in August 1946 at age 97.
