George Beal letter on federal appointments, Norway, 1869

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

George L. Beal of Norway wrote to George F. Shepley of Portland about the apparent reluctance of President U.S. Grant to remove political appointees from patronage positions and appoint his own people.

Beal, colonel of the 29th Maine Regiment during the Civil War, had served in Louisiana, also the site of Brig. Gen. Shepley's service as commander of the 12th Maine Regiment, then military governor of Louisiana.

Both men were delegates to the 1868 Republican National Convention.

Beal expressed his interest in being appointed surveyor of Portland and noted that men who had served as soldiers should be given the appointments. Beal was the first department commander of the Maine Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans organization.
