Request for G.F. Shepley speech, Skowhegan, 1868

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Z.A. Smith wrote to George F. Shepley, a Portland lawyer, asking him to set a date to give a political speech in Skowhegan.

Smith had written about a month earlier, asking Shepley to speak at a Republican ratification of the Grant-Colfax ticket event. In this letter, Smith reminded Shepley of his promise to address the Somerset County Republicans soon.

Shepley, well-known for his Civil War service as commander of the 12th Maine, then as a brigadier general who served as the military governor of Louisiana, had switched from the Democratic to the Republican party after the war.
