Description

This is a close up shot of the 19 year old Italian ski racer, Gustavo Thoeni, at the 1971 World Cup competition at Sugarloaf. Thoeni also raced in the Downhills at that competition; where he placed 12th in the Kandahar downhill and 3rd in the Tall Timber Classic downhill.

In 1971 Thoeni won his first of 4 overall World Cup titles. He also earned a Gold and 2 Silver medals in the Olympics. Thoeni went on to compete in the 1972, 76 and 80 Olympics and later he became a ski coach for the Italian ski team. The most famous athlete that Thoeni coached was the great Alberto Tomba, who set many ski racing records.
