Flagpoles, 1971 Sugarloaf World Cup Ski Races

Contributed by Sugarloaf Mountain Ski Club through Ski Museum of Maine

As part of the 1971 World Cup Ski Races title theme, "Tall Timber Classic," large tree trunks were used as flagpoles. They were placed in front of the Base Lodge at Sugarloaf where the awards ceremonies and other events tool place daily. Three professional lumbermen volunteered to put the flags up and take them down each day.

The three volunteers who shimmied up the poles each day were Bernard "Barnie" Thompson of Brewer, ME; Daniel Harkins of Greene, ME; and Wesley McKagne of Westbrook, ME.

The US, Maine and FIS were the three flags flown each day. The FIS, Federation Internationale du Ski, is the governing body of international alpine ski racing.
