Recommendation for Horace Jordan, Portland, 1863

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Samuel J. Anderson, a lawyer in Portland, wrote to Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, military governor of Louisiana, to recommend Horace M. Jordan of Westbrook, who studied law in Anderson's office.

Anderson wrote that Jordan was visiting New Orleans and planned to relocate there. Shepley had been a lawyer in Portland before the war. He went to Louisiana as commander of the 12th Maine Regiment and was soon appointed commander of the 3rd Brigade, then military commandant of New Orleans, and military governor of the state.

Anderson wrote that Jordan wanted to enter a law firm, go into business for himself, or work as a newspaper editor or reporter if the law was not a possibility.

Nathan Webb, also a Portland lawyer, concurred with Anderson's assessment of Jordan.
