Description

Sir William Pepperrell of Kittery was a merchant, a British officer, and a colonial governor of Massachusetts. He bought and sold African slaves throughout his life and left four slaves to his wife in his will.

This portrait by Joseph B. Kahill, (1882-1952) is after the portrait by John Smibert at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
