Orphanage plea for support from military governor, New Orleans, 1862

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

The directors of the Catholic Institution for the Instruction of Indigent Orphans wrote to Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, military governor of New Orleans, seeking support to keep the institution open.

It reportedly had 250 free children of color of both sexes to whom it provided instruction in English and French. The directors asked that it be considered like the other public schools of the city and funded accordingly.

Otherwise, they reported, it would have to close as its previous sources of funding, mostly rents, had dried up during the war.
