Cmdr. Preble request to Gen. G.F. Shepley, near Mobile, 1862

Description

Navy Commander George Henry Preble, who was relieved of his command after failing to stop a Confederate ship that ran the Union blockade on the Mississippi River, wrote a number of pleas to President Lincoln, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, and fellow Portlander Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley.

In this letter, Preble notes that he is leaving the Mobile area and asks Shepley to send letters Preble wrote to be published in newspapers in New Orleans and Portland.

Shepley was military governor of Louisiana. He joined the 12th Maine Regiment as a colonel and soon after arriving in the New Orleans area, was given command of the 3rd Brigade. He was military commandant of New Orleans before being named to the statewide post.
