Description

Penman and artist Horace W. Shaylor Sr. of Portland drew this pencil sketch in 1896.

The landscape features Goose Eye Mountain, part of the Mahoosuc Range, drawn from Sunday River, Newry.

At age 80, Shaylor (1845-1925) donated over 100 of his pictures to the Nathan Clifford School and the Butler School, both in Portland.

Shaylor developed a system of handwriting. He taught penmanship and wrote manuals of penmanship and drawing.

Shaylor's son, Horace Jr., photographed this and other of his father's pencil sketches and complied them into an album for his daughter.
