Description
Navy Commander George Henry Preble, a native of Portland, addressed a 10-page report on the incident in Mobile Bay on Sept. 4, 1862, when the Confederate ship Oreto (Florida) ran through the blockade that Preble, in the Oneida, was defending.
Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles and President Abraham Lincoln dismissed Preble after the incident. Preble made a plea for his command to be restored.
The report, addressed to Rear Adm. David G. Farragut, commander of the Naval forces in the Gulf, but in the papers of Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, military governor of Lousiana, explains the circumstances of the incident and asks Farragut, as Preble's immediate commanding officer, "to aid me in obtaining justice."
