Brig. Gen. G.F. Shepley to Edwin Stanton, Portland, 1862

Description

George F. Shepley, Brigadier General of Volunteers for the Union Army, wrote to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton about his expected trip to Washington, D.C. after visiting in Portland.

Shepley wrote about apprehension he was hearing expressed about the Union capacity to hold Louisiana and the need to take Vicksburg.

He wrote that he hoped to return to Louisiana with the assurance of more troops to be sent there.
