Dr. George F. Gale of Brattleboro, Vermont, surgeon for the 8th Vermont Infantry, wrote to the quartermaster, perhaps of his regiment, in New Orleans in May 1862 requesting a coffin for Fred Shantell, who "died last night in Hospital from starvation."
Frederick Shantell of Middlesex, Vermont, a native of Canada, was a private in Co. E of the 8th Vermont Infantry.
The letter is among those saved by George F. Shepley of Portland, who served as commander of the 3rd Brigade in the Department of the Gulf and as military governor of Louisiana.
