Contributed by Winslow Historical Preservation Committee

Description

Houses in Winslow after the 1936 Kennebec River flood.

This image looks in a southerly direction at flooded homes along Lithgow Street in Winslow, Maine. Most houses on the west side of Lithgow Street were eventually washed away in a flood in 1987, and the owners were not allowed to rebuild on that location.

They were compensation with money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The normal channel of the Kennebec River is behind the homes.
