Contributed by Mount Desert Island Historical Society
This photo is of Virginia Somes Sanderson holding a hand saw on Sheep Island in Somesville Harbor, 1949. She was descended from the first non-native settler, Abraham Somes, to Mount Desert Island.
Virginia Sanderson grew up in Somesville and maintained a home and land on Somes Pond until her death in 1990. Ms. Sanderson donated her Somes Pond home and surrounding 200 acres of land, with a sizeable trust, to create the Somes-Meynell Wildlife Preserve in 1984.
During her lifetime, Virginia Sanderson worked in the field of education as a professor of special education. Upon her retirement in 1982, she wrote and published a history of Somesville titled, "A Living History."
The white, wooden foot bridge over the Mill Pond in the center of Somesville was donated Ms. Sanderson in memory of her grandfather, Thaddeus Shepley Somes.
