Description
The firefighter training structure on the southeast shore of Little Chebeague Island was built by crew members of the USS Denebola, a destroyer tender, about 1943 to train sailors in shipboard firefighting. The steel structure simulates a ship's machinery compartment.
Oil burning on water under the floor grating provided realistic practice for sailors learning to extinguish fires using seawater pumped through waterfog nozzles.
The Navy's North Atlantic Fleet of destroyers and escort vessels trained in Casco Bay during World War II. Little Chebeague was used primarily for recreation for sailors.
The Navy called it "Bldg. No. 3 Simulated Fire Bldg."
