Description
Charles Bridges, 23, was promoted to corporal of Co. E of Volunteer Light Infantry, 1st Regiment, 1st Division of the Militia of Maine on April 25, 1861. The company, also known as the Castine Light Infantry, consisted mostly of men from the Penobscot Bay area, including Castine, where Bridges was born, and Stockton Springs, among others. The document is signed by Seth K. Devereaux, the commanding officer of the company. Bridges' promotion came shortly before the regiment mustered into Civil War service, becoming the 2nd Maine Infantry Volunteers.
