Description
This iron collar and chain are said to have been filed from the neck of a Negro field hand who came inside the Federal lines from the Confederacy in 1862 at Pontchartrain, Louisiana. The collar was filed from the man's neck by Captain Charles C.G. Thornton, 12th Maine volunteers, and presented by him to the Maine Historical Society.
