An order from the Adjutant General in Augusta on April 25, 1861, appointed Dr. Alonzo Garcelon of Lewiston as Hospital Surgeon of the additional volunteer Militia of Maine.

His appointment made Garcelon responsible for establishing a Regimental Hospital in Portland, and for supplying regiments with necessary medical supplies and equipment.

Garcelon (1813-1906) was a graduate of Bowdoin College and the Medical College of Ohio. He and his brother-in-law William H. Waldron founded the Lewiston Journal.

Garcelon also served in the Maine House and Maine Senate and was crucial in the Maine State Seminary, which became Bates College, being located in Lewiston. He served one term as governor, in 1879.
