Eben Calderwood from Monroe, Va., 1863

Description

Pvt. Eben Calderwood of Co. H, 21st Maine Regiment wrote to his wife Mary in Vinalhaven to report that the regiment had left Long Island where it spent the winter and was on its way to New Orleans.

"I expect we are going to see the elaphant before long," he wrote. Soldiers referred to battle as the "elephant."
