Description

The grandstand for New Sweden's 40th Anniversary celebrations.

In 1870, through the efforts of William Widgery Thomas and Governor Joshua L. Chamberlain, Maine established the Swedish Colony north of Caribou to help repopulate the state after the Civil War and protect the northern border that had been established by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty less than 40 years before.

In 1910 New Sweden celebrated its 40th Anniversary.
