Macomber Playground, Augusta, ca. 1935

Contributed by Maine State Archives

Description

During the Depression, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, and later, the Federal Works Projects Administration, channeled funds into a variety of public works improvements. A common project is represented by this image, as numerous playgrounds, ball fields and recreational facilities were built across the country.

This Augusta playground received additional funding from a local philanthropist, George Macomber. His gift made it possible for a pavilion-like field house to be built on the playground, where equipment could be stored and children could play inside on rainy days. The playground was named for its benefactor.
