Lt. John Sheahan, formerly of the 1st Maine Cavalry, was waiting in White House, Virginia, to join his new regiment, the 31st Maine Infantry. He had recently been commissioned as a 1st lieutenant.
He wrote to his father in Dennysville about Grant's army, the wounded coming in from battlefields, and the declining strength of the Confederate army.
