John P. Sheahan of Dennysville, a private in the 1st Maine Cavalry, Co. K, wrote to his father about the new winter camp the regiment had set up. John Sheahan Sr. had just been in the Washington, D.C., area and visited his son. The elder Sheahan made the trip from Maine to take home the body of a younger son, William, who was killed at Rappahannock Station on November 7, 1863. William Sheahan was a corporal in Co. F of the 6th Maine Infantry.
