S. Cary & Co stumpage bill, 1844
Description
A stumpage bill for 1842-1843 shows how much timber the S. Cary Co. cut and the costs of the timber. Shepard Cary was a prominent Houlton lumberman, merchant and legislator. This document shows Cary took advantage of the settlement of the boundary dispute by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 to continue his operations on the Aroostook River and to expand into the Fish River watershed which drains to the St. John River at Ft. Kent.
