Description

John Sheahan of the Maine 1st Cavalry Regiment wrote to his father in Dennysville from the "Battle Field near Gettysburg" on July 5, 1863. He had written his father a short note the day before to tell him of the Union victory. Sheahan wrote, "the rebels are in a hard place and in my opinion will never go back to Virginia an organized army." He predicted the war would end soon because the Confederates had no supplies coming in. He also expected another "desperate fight" soon.
