John Sheahan, a private in the 1st Maine Cavalry, wrote to his father in Dennysville about "a very heavy battle here yesterday." He wrote that the company charged with 22 men and only 7 came out of the battle. The company lost most of its non-commissioned officers. Sheahan (1842-1894) enlisted in August 1862 at age 21.
