Potato growers set up this blockade of potatoes to protest the import of Canadian potatoes on March 27, 1980.
The growers donated some of these potatoes to Mrs. Medely Hartley of Canada, at left, and helped her in bagging them.
The farmers were protesting the importation of Canadian potatoes into the U.S. and said they will keep the border crossing closed until the U.S. Department of Commerce places a ban on potato imports.
The blockade was put up at dawn on March 27 at Fort Fairfield and eight other Maine-New Brunswick border points.
