Description

This photograph was taken by Sewall Merritt, 2nd Mate aboard the 'Dorothy B. Barrett'. Sewall was the son of Capt. William Merritt of South Portland, Maine.

The Maine built 'Dorothy B. Barrett' was sunk by a German submarine U-117 off the coast of New Jersey on August 14, 1918. Sewall Merritt was in the ship's lifeboat.
