Waterville's Panthers, a YMCA basketball team, won the New England youth basketball title in 1944.
Teddy Shiro, third from left in front row, was a leader of the team. The son of Celia and Louis Shiro, Ted was one of a number of Jewish youths in Maine who enjoyed athletic success.
Besides playing basketball, Shiro was an all-state football player in 1945 and Kennebec Valley Conference batting champion in baseball. He was named Top Teen-aged Athlete in the U.S. in 1945 by the Chicago Tribune.
Shiro attended Colby College where he played football, basketball and baseball. He was inducted in the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.
