Lemuel Moody was the Keeper of the Portland Observatory in the early 1800's. This image is taken from a color slide of the original oil painting at the Maine Historical Society. Lemuel Moody was active on the Portland waterfront and with the business of shipping during the late 1700's, early 1800's. He was not only the Keeper of the Portland Observatory, but was instrumental in having the Observatory constructed. His affidavit of a sea capture and time in foreign prisons is available to read, as well as his careful temperature readings through the years in Portland.
