Description

The Portland Company foundry created metal parts for lighthouses, as well as many other things.

The stairways and metal flooring that held the heavy lights were made at the Portland Company in Portland, Maine. The Portland Company began its work in 1846 building locomotives.

The steel working process led the company into fashioning engines and metal parts for many industries: shipping, transportation, paper, power, and ordnance.
