Description

An Inuit woman with a toddler in the hood of her parka stands by the schooner Bowdoin's wheel with four older children, two daughters and two sons (one partly hidden). Distinctive traditional clothing for women included high boots worn with short fur pants. Infants and toddlers rode on their mothers' backs, protected by the oversized hood of her amautik, or parka. Inuit families were frequent visitors to the Bowdoin during each of her twenty-six northern expeditions between 1921 and 1954.
