Description
In 1890, an electric railway connecting Augusta to Gardiner was built. A car-house and workshop were available for maintenance and preservation of the original 12 cars and 31 employees. By 1902, the line had grown to have new endpoints in Waterville and Lewiston. The line reached its peak when it achieved 152.9 miles of line in 1915. This distance covered as far north as Winslow and as far South as Yarmouth. This photograph, taken before any expansions, shows open car #14 passing through Hallowell.
