Man's black wool bowler, Auburn, ca. 1890

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

A men's black wool bowler hat carries two labels. One reads, "Highest Grade, Townsend Grace Co., New York, Baltimore, U.S.A."

The other label, placed by the seller, reads, "L. E. Flanders Co., Auburn, Me."

The hat is a size 6 7/8.

Well-dressed men wore top hats for most of the 19th century. The bowler replaced the top hat until it was replaced by the fedora. One reason that top hats went out of style was that they did not fit into automobiles.
