James Brown Thornton of Saco (1794-1873) sat for sculptor James A. Greenough of Boston who created this carving for a cameo brooch on Jan. 9, 1849.
Thornton, the son of Thomas G. Thornton, the marshal for the state of Maine, and Elizabeth Cutts Thornton, was a ship owner and merchant. He also owned considerable property.
He married Eliza Goodkin in 1817. The couple had 11 children.
