A miniature portrait on ivory of Sarah Hudson Mellen Gilman (1803-1884) who was the daughter of Prentiss Mellen and Sarah Hudson Mellen.
Her father was the first chief justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. Her brother Grenville was a poet and her brother Frederick an artist.
She married Nicholas Gilman in 1825.
