Description

Brig. Gen. Amiel Whipple (1818-1863), a topographical engineer from Greenwich, Massachusetts, who reached the rank of major general in the Civil War. He served as chief topographical engineer under Gen. George B. McClellan.

He led a division at the Battle fo Fredericksburg, then was seriously wounded at Chancellorsville. He died shortly after of his injuries.

This is one of a collection of cartes de visite, card photographs, that soldiers traded and shared with each other. .
