Janet W. Hobbs as 'Young Lady in 1866,' Portland, 1923

Description

Janet W. (Mrs. George S.) Hobbs of Neal Street in Portland posed as Edouard Manet's Young Lady in 1866 for the "Exhibition of Pictures" at First Parish Church in Portland.

Hobbs was one of 29 church members who took on the personae of subjects of noted portraits for the evening entertainment that featured historical information and music.

Manet (1832-1883) painted Young Lady in response to his friend Gustave Courbet's Woman with a Parrot, which was exhibited in the Salon of 1866.
