Samuel Longfellow, ca. 1870

Description

An unknown artist painted this portrait of a man presumed to be the Rev. Samuel Longfellow (1819-1892).

A native of Portland, he graduated from Harvard in 1839, and received a theology degree there in 1846.

An ordained Unitarian minister, Longfellow became pastor at Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1848; at Brooklyn, in 1853; and at Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1860.

He was an outspoken abolitionist.

Samuel gave the eulogy for his famous brother, the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
