Description

This sampler by Dolley Carleton with silk thread on a simple piece of linen is dated approximately 1770.

Carleton practiced her stitches by illustrating the most classic of sampler motifs, the alphabet. She rendered the letters in both cursive and print styles.

Rather than attempt a floral border, she chose to merely frame her work with a repeating "V" pattern.
